"Gaufrey" : édition et étude littéraire

" Gaufrey " is a 10746 alexandrines epic poem whose single manuscript, dated from the second half of the fourteenth century, is preserved at the Montpellier Ecole de Médicine Library. It is part of a group of seven poems from the Rebel Barons cycle, " Gaufrey " following " Doon de Maience " and preceeding " Ogier le Danois ". The study of the language reveals a chief characteristic of Picardy. The study of the characters searches the connections between the poem and those who preceeded it. Epic, supernatural and romance are combined in this late epic poem without any " decadence ". Gaurfey is the oldest of the twelve sons of Doon de Maience, and the father of Ogier ; with the oldet son of Garin de Monglane, Hernaut de Biaulande, he has to rescue his father, Doon, and Garin captured by the Saracens. Grifon, the traitor and Gaufrey's brother, is presented as Ganelon's father. He slanders his brother near Charlemagne. But the two genuine heroes are on the one hand Robastre, on the other hand a young saracen woman, Flordespine, whose tricks will animate the action." Gaufrey " est une chanson de geste tardive de 10746 alexandrins dont le seul manuscrit, daté de la deuxième moitié du XIVème siècle, est conservé à la Bibliothèque de l'Ecole de Médecine de Montpellier. Elle s'insère dans un ensemble de sept chansons du cycle des Barons Rebelles, " Gaufrey " suivant " Doon de Maience " et précédant " Ogier le Danois ". L'étude de la langue met en évidence la dominante picarde du manuscrit. L'étude littéraire, à partir d'une étude croisée des personnages, recherche les liens qu'établit le poète entre sa chanson et celles qui l'ont précédée. Epopée, merveilleux et romans mêlés caractérisent cette chanson de geste tardive, sans qu'on y décèle la " décadence " d'un genre. Le personnage de Gaufrey est présenté comme l'aîné des douze fils de Doon de Mayence, et le père d'Ogier ; avec le fils aîné de Garin de Monglane, Hernaut de Biaulande, il va devoir délivrer son père, Doon, et Garin capturés par les Sarrasin. Le rôle du traître est joué par un des frère auprès de Charlemagne. Mais les deux véritables héros sont d'une part un vassal de Garin, Robastre, d'autre part une jeune Sarrasine, Flordespine, dont les ruses vont animer l'action
